MAKING ROOMS FOR LIVING
Summer Spin Art Party
So inspired by DamiEn Hirst and an amazing spring day, we headed to Central Park to make some SPIN ART! This is easy and fun for so many ages and gives you tons of wall art to choose from. Check out the video below and my personal reviews of spin art machines. They aren't all what I remember from when I was a kid! For one, the paper used to be much bigger. I actually had to rig these in order to make bigger pieces. There are professional ones you can purchase or rent that are powerful and the paper is a bit bigger (but not much). I felt myself still wanting...I guess the best answer is to make it yourself! But, if you don't have the time or resources, see below for what I thought about several machines that I used.
SPIN ART SUPPLIES: (1) Paper Plates: I found these by EcoProducts of sugarcane—they're compostable and renewable. (2) A record player if you want to go old school: this one by Numark is still available. (3) Paint: you can use the paint that comes with it, but I wanted to be a bit more eco friendly for the kids, so we used: Chroma Green Series Tempera Paint, (4) A spin art machine: for this project, I found the best option to be The Alex My Art Spinner (battery operated one), (5) Crayons: try these Recycled Crayon Sticks (6) Markers: try Ecolorgy Markers from Red Apple School Supply; and don't forget plenty of 7th Generation wipes!

3 Ideas to Show Off your Spin Art
1. Blow it up
Choose your favorite creation. We choose one of our crayon pieces. Take a picture or scan it. Upload it onto the computer and crop it/enhance it to your liking. Then send it to a digital printing facility, like Duggal in NYC, and have it printed out big. Be dramatic! We had ours framed by pictureframes.com.

2. Find a Frame you Love
Pick out a great spin art detail and put it in a really cool frame that you LOVE. I found this one at AREAWARE. I love how this looks like an outerspace landscape. The contrast with the frame really makes it pop. This will surely be a conversation piece.

3. Fill up a Wall
Make your spin art on a spin art machine with paper plates and paint. Pick up some shadow box frames. We purchased 9 white ones from Target and used bright colored lucite from Canal Plastics. Mount the plates to the back of the shadow boxes with carpet tape, mounting strips, or heavy duty double sided tape. Then arrange them on the wall. We made a grid of nine, but see what inspires you.
a walk in the park
The weather was gorgeous; we had a blast making spin art; AND we had a great little picnic. We can't thank The Company Store and Company Kids enough for sponsoring the event. So maybe you don't take this all to the park every day, but these are great items to add to you backyard, your playroom, or any room at all!
