Sandy meet Dorothy

We're all hunkered down waiting for Sandy to arrive and hoping for the best. Our bath tubs are filled and the pantry is stocked with canned goods and bottled water. Now there is nothing left to do slip into these ruby slippers and wait for the rainbow.

Good luck weathering the storm NYC!

October 1st marks the beginning of one of my favorite NYC events, the month-long festival of architecture, now in its second year, Archtober! Every single day this month there will be different events, iactivities, and programs, imany available to the public for free that focus on theiimportance of architecture in daily life.

On my list of events to check out is the guided tour of the Highline, and the "Women in Design" panel discussion.iBut if you're able to make it to nothing else, I'd pick a nice day, put on my tourist hat and attend the Around Manhattan NYC Architectural Boat Tour.

For a complete list of events go to:http://www.archtober.org/calendar.

This is where everyone should be this weekend...

artMRKT Hamptons is this weekend!

If you haven't been to an artMRKT event before it’s an amazing contemporary and modern art fair featuring the work of top galleries from around the country all in one location. This three day event will kick off on Friday night at the Bridgehampton Historical Society with an evening preview event benefiting the Parish Art Museum.

At the top of my list of must-sees is this new piece by Stephanie Hirsch. Wouldn't it look cool in a beachhouse?

If you haven't gotten your tickets yet, you can get them online here. See you there!

Mars Bar...Brings Back so Many Memories!

I remember hanging out at NYC's legendary Lower East Side dive bariMars Bar in the early 90's when I was up to a lot of no good. This was way before the lower east side was "The Lower East Side"! Boy has it changed. So much so that I remember hanging out at Mars Bar and the drug dealers would hang out on the stoops of dilapidated town houses around the corner where a mix of seemingly "normal" looking people and total junkies would literally stand on line for their services.Mars bar was full of so many stories and so much history. I loved hanging out there.

Well last night brought me back to those days when I attended the photography show ofiDebby Hymowitz. Her amazing work centered on the infamous Mars Bar which was torn down last year. The gritty graffiti covered bar was a terrific subject and provided a really strong juxtaposition to the "new" Bowery just outside where the show was held.So crazy how the world is just a kaleidoscope!
Here are a few of her best shots! The only problem is, which one do you buy?

On a side note Debby Hymowitz is oneiof the artists that will be featured in the Free Arts NYCiauction April 23rd.iIf you haven't yet gotten your tickets now is the time!

There are so many exciting design events going on in the city right now! At the top of my list is to check out the NYC20: New York 20th Century Art and Design Fair.

This inaugural design fair highlights the best in mid-century art and design from 36 premier dealers all from 1st Dibs including Downtown, Dragonette, Katy Kane Vinate & Couture Clothing, Liz O'Brien, and Todd Merrill.

An early buying preview party will be held this Thursday, April 12th from 6-9pm in the tent at Lincoln Center. Co-chaired by Michael Bruno, Brad Ford, Julie Hillman and David Mann, the preview will benefit the Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture. Ticket prices are $500 for entry at 6 p.m.; $250 for entry at 6:30 p.m.; and $150 for entry at 7 p.m.

The event opens to the public on Friday, April 13 and runs through Sunday, April 15. NYC20 takes place in the Tent at Lincoln Center in Damrosch Park, West 62nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues. Admission is $20.

Maybe I would buy:

This sofa from Dragonette by Paul Mcobb

and, I would put it with the "Metomorphosis Table" by Philip & Kelvin Laverne
Offered by:Donzella

Then, I would add these two hanging bookshelves designed by Gio Pontio
Offered by: Caira Mandaglio

Now I must go and shop for the lighting, the rug, etc.
Hope to see you there!

LIVING ROOM: Curating for Life

In this room you'll find the work of my favorite artists and artisans and learn how I was able to incorporate them into my "family lifestyle." Also, you can watch an amazing video that shows my visit to scuptor Silas Seandel's studio in Chelsea, NY.

HOME OFFICE: A New Point of View

Here you'll find some sexy inspiration pieces that helped me guide the way throughout the design of my apartment as well as some unexpected ways to find art.

ARTIST STUDIO: Marilyn Minter Unplugged

I was fortunate enough to interview Marilyn Minter for this issue, and in this room, you'll find not only text and incredible images from her studio, but actual live audio tracks!

What a Difference Curating Makes

Ok so I've used the same bed and chandelier in three different bedrooms-FINE-I admit it. In this room you'll see how I was able to do it in three completely unique ways

GUEST HOUSE: Crushing on Kara Mann

Kara Mann is an Interior Designer who can most definitely express herself! In this room you'll get to read my intriguing interview with the young, hip chick herself.

06.14.2010 / World Cup

Covetable World Cup

I'm sure many of you experienced the World Cup MANIA that went on over the weekend. Regardless of who won, who lost, who tied, and what that noise is, I was definitely interested to learn that art, design, and fashion are playing their part in this competition!

Nike has set up pop-up stadiums in several cities world-wide. The Bowery pop-up stadium, whose basement locker rooms are pictured above, is operating as a venue for the NYC soccer community to congregate to watch the World Cup games.

The Official Art Poster Edition of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa includes 17 acclaimed artists. The 17 different posters within the collection are all SO unique. I just loved 12/17, "Red Elephant" by Isolde Krams. It's such a bold representation!

This Nike top was a design collaboration between Nunca and an acclaimed Brazilian street artist. It's made for both high and low performance activities. You'll feel like a total athlete the second you put it on, but I can't promise anything about after you start your workout! :)

Havaianas are everyone's favorite sandal, they're so comfortable, affordable, and easy to grab on your way out the door! I probably wear mine too much. This Brazilian company has come out with both men's and women's sandals to represent every team playing in the World Cup (Spain pictured above), how cool is that?!?
